Your first day at flight attendant training feels like stepping into an entirely different world from the military. Instead of the constant shouts of drill sergeants, you’re greeted by a polished woman in a navy blue uniform with a silk scarf tied neatly around her neck.
“Welcome to SkyWays Training Academy,” she says warmly, smiling as if she hasn’t seen the world end and restart in a single wave. “From this day forward, you’ll learn the skills to become the face of international travel: poise, safety, and grace.”
You shift uncomfortably in your seat. The dress you found and were changed into fits perfectly now, but sitting among the other recruits?"most of them young women around your new age?"you can’t help but feel out of place. Just days ago, you were piloting a fighter jet. Now, you’re learning how to pour orange juice without spilling it.
The instructor continues. “You’ll be graded on presentation, etiquette, and safety knowledge. You are no longer soldiers, students, or whatever your life was before. You are professionals of the skies.”
Her words sting a little. No longer soldiers. You weren’t ready to hear that, even though you know you walked away from the military yourself.
As the morning moves on, you’re partnered with another trainee, a cheerful brunette named Marissa. She flashes you a bright smile.
“First time?” she asks as you practice wheeling a service cart down a mock airplane aisle.
You chuckle nervously. “You could say that.”
She giggles. “Don’t worry. By the end of this, we’ll all look like we were born in heels.”
You try to smile back, though inside your heart pounds. The memory of the plane you shot down still gnaws at you. And yet… when you glance at the reflection of yourself in the shiny metal of the service cart, you see a confident young woman staring back?"a stranger who’s quickly becoming you.
