A heavy sigh escapes your newly young lips. "Well, first things first, I guess we need to figure out what the heck just happened." You glance at Ben, who looks like he's about to have a full-blown panic attack. "Ben, hey, it's okay. We're... we're still us, right? Just... younger."
Ben runs a hand through his surprisingly soft, now fuller, hair. "But my wife! My kids! They won't even recognize me!" The despair in his voice is palpable. The happy life he had built is now seemingly out of reach, replaced by the confusing reality of being a teenager again.
Alexa, despite her initial excitement, now looks genuinely worried. "Maybe... maybe the spellbook has something else? A way to go back?" She scurries back towards the patio table, her youthful energy now directed towards a desperate search.
You follow her, your own mind racing. The memories of your adult life feel so real, so recent. The idea of reliving the awkwardness of adolescence, the uncertainty of the future you already lived, is daunting. Yet, there's also a strange sense of possibility. A chance to do things differently? To avoid mistakes? The thought is quickly overshadowed by the more pressing issue of your current predicament.
Ben joins you both at the table, his teenage brow furrowed in concentration as he flips through the worn pages of the spellbook. The flowery script and arcane symbols that seemed so promising before now feel mocking in their inscrutability.
"There's nothing else about reversing it," Alexa says, her voice tinged with disappointment. "Just the warning about the randomness of the Wave."
"So, we're stuck like this?" Ben asks, the panic returning to his voice. "As teenagers?"
"Maybe not forever," you say, trying to sound more optimistic than you feel. "The Wave came once, it disappeared, and now it's... done this. Maybe it'll reverse again, just as randomly."
"And in the meantime?" Ben gestures wildly at his smaller frame. "I'm supposed to go back to high school? Date again? My wife thinks I'm a middle-aged man!"
The reality of Ben's situation hits you hard. While the prospect of reliving your teenage years is strange, Ben has a whole family waiting for him, a life that has been drastically altered.
"We need to figure out a plan," you say, taking charge. "First, we need to get some clothes that actually fit. Then, we need to decide what we're going to do. Do we try to hide? Do we try to explain? And most importantly, do we try to find a way to change back?"
Alexa nods eagerly. "Maybe the library has more books about magic? Now that I have more time, I can read them all!" Her enthusiasm, though slightly out of place, is a welcome spark of hope.
"The library..." you repeat, a thought forming in your mind. Alex always had a knack for finding obscure information. Even as Alexa, that inquisitive nature might still be there. "Okay, Alexa, that's a good idea. Maybe there's more information out there about the Wave, about the Arbitrary Abeyance, about anything that can help us."
Ben sighs, running a hand through his hair again. "I guess we don't have much choice. But how are we supposed to explain this to anyone?"
"One step at a time," you say. "First, clothes. Then, the library. We stick together, just like we did before."
The three of you, now a collection of teenagers with the memories of adulthood, step out of Ben's house and into the bright afternoon sun. The world feels both familiar and strangely new. The laughter of children playing down the street sounds different, the worries of adulthood replaced by the more immediate anxieties of adolescence.
As you walk towards the nearest clothing store, a sense of determination begins to form. You may be teenagers again, but you still have the knowledge and experiences of your adult lives. You might be facing a bizarre and terrifying situation, but you'll face it together. And maybe, just maybe, you can find a way to turn back the clock once more, or at least navigate this unexpected second chapter of your lives.
